What have you been up to under your roof?
So we’re a number of days either exclusively or almost exclusively at home. Are you managing? Are you good at this? Are the walls closing in?
Truth be told, I’m a homebody. I wasn’t always, but I’ve become one in recent years. I have joked with my family that I could write a book all about puttering.
Take today, for example. It’s Saturday, everyone’s home. (Right, just like the five days before that.) We’ve all been just doing our thing. As I was puttering my day away, I took some pics to share what I think are some truly joyful puttering activities. Hope you’ll wanna try one or two.
Do a mini-design-maker-over.
I wish I took a before pic of this little corner make-over, because it was a real bleep-show. Since I inherited this beautiful piece from my lovely mother-in-law, I haven’t taken the time to really make it part of my space. This corner of my dining room is so nice now, with plants, pictures and artwork, and since I have set up my dining room as a writing and working space, it’s so much nicer to look at!

(Re)pot a plant.
My sister-in-law and I are both plant lovers. We both have a great assortment, but still love what we see when we go to each other’s homes. Last time I was at hers, she clipped this from her stunning much larger version, giving me 3 leaves as a baseline. It sat in water for about two weeks until it began to root. I began to see the formation of a new leaf, but still hadn’t planted it into a more permanent home. I keep a bag of soil around, but even if you don’t, maybe you have a summer planter filled with soil? See if it’s time for you to re-pot a plant.

Make an indoor rock garden.
Had a bunch of rocks and shells in a jar gathering dust for about two years. I emptied the contents of the jar into a colander and gave them a good rinse, cleaned and repurposed the glass jar as a candle holder, and arranged some of the rocks and shells on this little glass dish. This brings a bit of joy.

Teach your dog a new trick. Or just hang out.
Kashie just likes to mostly be next to someone, that’s his pleasure. So when I proposed he “shake paw” he was not exactly sure what I was getting at. Still, it’s a good time to be a dog, a cat, or any animal friend. They must be wondering what they did to deserve all this attention.

Give yourself a new haircut.
I’ve got no pics to share for this, but believe me when I say I recently cut over half my hair length off, to just above my shoulders. I just went for it! And it felt great afterwards. What’s the harm in experimenting? No one will be seeing it for a while!
Listen to a whole concert from start to finish.
A very smart programming director at HBO played a Prince concert from 1987 today, and what a treat it was! I had forgotten about some of those songs and how much they meant to me. It was really moving. Thanks HBO!

Watch inspirational or funny Youtube vidoes.
This is a real no-brainer. I’m sure we’ve all seen many of the same videos by now. Isn’t that a remarkable thought? We really are in this together. Here is one to cry by and one to laugh by (pre-COVID mind you).
So that’s been my day. (I also cook, eat, and drink of course.)
What have you been up to? Whatever it is, I hope it brings you some joy in an unsettling time.
Stay safe, calm and home.
